The One True God

Deuteronomy 6:4

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

Isaiah 43:10-11

“You are my witnesses," declares the Lord, "and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior."

The Godhead

Christ taught a distinction of Persons in the Godhead which He expressed in specific terms of relationship, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He did not, however, reveal this distinction and relationship as to its mode, so it is incomprehensible.

Luke 1:35 – And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God."

Matthew 11:25-27 – At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Matthew 28:19 – "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

2 Corinthians 13:14 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

1 John 1:3 – …and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

God the Father which constitutes Him “the Father”, and not the Son; God the Son which constitutes Him “the Son”, and not the Father; God the Holy Spirit which constitutes Him “the Holy Spirit”, and not the Father or the Son. The Father is the Begetter, the Son is the Begotten, and the Holy Spirit is the one proceeding from the Father and the Son. Therefore, because these three persons in the Godhead are in a state of unity, there is but one Lord God Almighty and His name one. The Godhead is the unity of these three persons.

The Identity & Cooperation in the Godhead

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are never identical as to Person; nor confused as to relation; nor divided in respect to the Godhead; nor opposed as to cooperation. The Son is in the Father and the Father is in the Son as to relationship. The Son is with the Father and the Father is with the Son, as to fellowship. The Father is not from the Son, but the Son is from the Father, as to authority. The Holy Spirit is from the Father and the Son proceeding, as to nature, relationship, cooperation, and authority. So, neither Person in the Godhead either exists or works separately or independently of the others.

Matthew 3:16-17 – And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 17:5 – He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

2 Peter 1:16-17 – For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

Acts 7:55-57 – But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.  And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

John 5:17-30 – But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.  For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.  Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

John 5:32 – “There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.”

John 5:37 – “And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen.”

John 8:17-18 – In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true.  I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”

Genesis 3:22 – Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever."

Daniel 7:9-14 – "As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

The Names of God

Here are a few names of God from the original Scripture written in Hebrew. A few names in the Old Testament are sufficient to show by just studying His many names, there is enough to prove that there is more than one person in the Godhead. I encourage everything to look up and study all of God’s names in the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts when you have the time to do so. It is understandable that I would not be able to list all His names within the allotted time for this study.

Elohim – This is the Hebrew word for “God” in Genesis 1:1 and around 2,700 other places in the Old Testament. It is the plural form of the word “Eloah” which means “deity” and “God”. Elohim then is not one person, or one in number, but one in unity. Elohim is not a divided Deity, but three persons in one God.

Jehovah – This is the Hebrew word for “Lord” in Deuteronomy 6:4 and around 7,600 other times in the Old Testament. It means the Self-existent, Eternal and Immutable One, or Unity. Since all three of the Godhead are referred to as Lord throughout all Scriptures, Jehovah can be assigned to all three persons, or God.

El – This is another the Hebrew word for “God” written 250 places in the Old Testament. It means the Strong One, or Elohim the Omnipotent (unlimited in power; able to do all things). All three persons in the Godhead are described in the Scriptures as omnipotent.

Adonai – This is another Hebrew word for “Lord” and is found 195 times in the Old Testament. It means Sovereign, Ruler, or Master. There are two Adonais mentioned in Psalms 110:1 and referred to in the New Testament in Matthew 22:44 as the Father and the Son.

Going Forward

God, the Father, rules from His throne in Heaven. God, the Son (Jesus Christ), rules from His throne next to the Father. God, the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, is here on Earth with us. The Father was the primary speaker in the Old Testament, the Son was the primary speaker in the beginning of the New Testament, and the Holy Spirit is the primary speaker in and through us in our time.

There are countless additional Scriptures that confirm the reality that there is three persons in one true Lord God Almighty. The intention of the Back to Basics course is to equip you with the foundational truths of our faith, igniting a small fire in you which propels you into deeper study of God’s Word.

2 Corinthians 10:4 says, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” The deeper you study and the more time you spend building your relationship with Him, the more that flame will spread in your spirit until it can no longer be contained in you. Jesus said in John 7:38, “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” You will become a wildfire of wisdom and a fully equipped disciple of Jesus Christ.

The mission of Convergent City Church, along with the worldwide Body of Christ, is to equip our people for the spreading of this knowledge, which has the power to rip the chains of sin and death off the people around us and igniting that same flame in them!
